In a shooting at the Bestbet Orange Park cardroom in Jacksonville, Florida, one person is in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, according to local police.

Police responded to calls of gunfire in the car park near the entrance to Bestbet around 4:44 pm on Wednesday and discovered a man with serious gunshot wounds.

The unnamed victim was taken to a nearby hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, though he managed to tell police his armed assailant had fled the scene.

A statement from the Orange Park Police Department (OPPD) said:

“We can confirm that the shooting is isolated and took place in the company parking lot. There is currently no threat to the community. This incident is still in the early stages of the investigation.”

A local news report that the man in the card room had been shot was later retracted, though players heard the shots and came out to investigate.

Bestbet has made no official statement about the incident and games are said to have resumed shortly after police arrived to take control of the scene.

Cardrooms and casinos have been the scene of numerous shootings this year, ranging from personal disputes to armed hijackings.

Last month, two men and a woman were shot in the parking lot of the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, all of whom survived the attack.

In September, a man was shot and killed after trying to stop an armed robbery at the Capitol Casino in Sacramento, the third incident at the casino in just three years.

The Hustler Casino in Gardena, California, home of the infamous Robbi Jade Lew/Garrett Adelstein “cheating” scandal, was raided by armed robbers in August.

Two security guards were injured, one seriously, when multiple armed assailants made off with an undisclosed amount of money in the raid

In the same month, an Oregon tribal casino was targeted by an armed robber, the gun-wielding suspect and a bystander who were both injured when police raided the Wildhorse Resort and Casino.

This year isn’t special when it comes to such incidents, as casinos and cardrooms have long been tempting targets for would-be robbers, with poker players regularly caught up in such attacks.

Tom ‘3BetPanda’ Steinbach was shot and seriously injured in a 2018 robbery that turned into a shooting outside the Texas Card House in Austin.

Poker pro Joe ‘JoeySal’ Salvaggio had his buy-in to the 2019 WSOP Main Event robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of the Rio in Vegas.

The Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida was the target of a gunman, as was the Aquarius Casino Resort and the Golden Nugget casinos in Laughlin, the gunman was shot and killed by police in the latter case.

In a robbery at the Bellagio, the suspect was shot dead after a shootout with Las Vegas police outside the casino in 2019.

Las Vegas resident Michael Charles Cohen, 49, was previously convicted of bank robberies, as well as arrests for kidnapping and carjacking.

Cohen was the prime suspect in a 2017 armed robbery, also at the Bellagio, that took place steps away from Doyle Brunson playing poker…
